AI automation to fix a phone or laptop

Orders the safest fixes first, and stops before a step that can erase anything, until a backup exists.

Level: Assist.

Trigger

When a phone or laptop misbehaves

Setup

about 20 min (estimate)

Before you start

Steps

  1. Back up before you change anything

Finish the backup for the device you are fixing, and say which one you used. iPhone: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977 Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/104984 Android: https://support.google.com/android/answer/2819582 Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/backup-and-restore-your-windows-pc-ac359b36-7015-4694-de9a-c5eac1ce9d9c

  2. Capture the symptom, not the secrets

Screenshot the error. Cover account numbers. Do not include a password, a recovery code, or a one-time sign-in code.

  3. Ask for the safest step only

Name the device, the system, and what you already tried. Custom instructions: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-custom-instructions

Help me fix one device. I will tell you the device, the system, and the symptom. Give only the next safest step. Do not skip ahead to a reset. If a step can erase data, stop and ask whether the backup is finished. Never ask me for a password, a recovery code, or a one-time sign-in code.
  4. Do that one step

Follow only the step in front of you. Write down what changed.

  5. Report the result

Paste what happened, still with no secrets, and ask for the next safest step.

I finished the last step. Here is what changed. Give the next safest step only. If the next step erases data, stop.
  6. Save the fix that worked

When it is sorted, write the device, the symptom, and the step that fixed it into a note. Leave out passwords.

Example output

Device: laptop. System: the current version. Symptom: Wi-Fi drops after sleep.
Backup: finished, today.
1. Forget the network and join it again.
2. Restart.
Stop: the next idea is a reset. Do not do it until you have said the backup finished and you have read what the reset erases.

Power move

The first reply asks for the device, the system, and the symptom, and it will not offer a reset until you say the backup is done.

What to check

  • A backup finished before any reset.
  • The chat never received a password or a recovery code.
  • You did one step, then looked at the result, before the next step.

What it can't do

It does not see the device. Back up before a reset or any step that erases data. Never paste a password, a recovery code, or a one-time sign-in code. A step that deletes data waits until you have confirmed the backup.

Privacy

Paste only the text a chat tool needs. Leave out passwords, account numbers, and identity numbers. The steps link to each tool's own help page when a setting matters.
