AI automation for home maintenance

Builds a repeating calendar for the appliances you actually own, and leaves out jobs that are not yours.

Level: Augment.

Trigger

At the start of a season, and when a job is due

Setup

about 25 min (estimate)

Before you start

Steps

  1. List what you actually have

Write the appliances and the jobs you are responsible for. Leave out anything the owner or a building does.

  2. Photograph the model, not the serial

Cover the serial number. Keep the photo with your notes. You will paste the model name only.

  3. Ask for intervals you can check

Paste the model names. Custom instructions: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-custom-instructions

From the appliance models I paste, list a maintenance interval for each. Say what the job is, how often, and whether a qualified person should do it. If you do not know the maker's interval, write check the maker. Do not invent a job for an appliance I did not name. Mark gas, wiring, and leaks as not a do-it-yourself job.
  4. Keep only what you can verify

Open the maker's page for each interval. Delete a line you cannot find, and delete a job that is not yours.

  5. Add the repeating events

Create one repeating event per job you kept. Name the appliance and the job. Repeating events: https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/37115

  6. Note the part you measured

If a filter or a lamp has a size printed on it, copy that size into the note. Do not guess a size the plate does not show.

Example output

Own: kettle, boiler, washing machine.
Kettle: descale about every three months. You found that on the maker's page.
Boiler: an annual visit by a qualified person. Not a job you do yourself.
Skipped: a gutter job for a house you rent, because that belongs to the owner.
Calendar: repeating event, Descale kettle, every three months.

Power move

Photograph the model plate and cover the serial number. Paste only the model. Keep an interval only when you can find it on the maker's own page.

What to check

  • Every repeating event is for an appliance you listed.
  • Each interval matches a page from the maker, not only the chat.
  • Gas, wiring, and leaks are marked for a qualified person.

What it can't do

It does not visit the house, and it does not know an interval you have not checked with the maker. Stop and call a qualified person for gas, wiring, or a leak. Cover the serial number before you photograph a plate.

Privacy

Paste only the text a chat tool needs. Leave out passwords, account numbers, and identity numbers. The steps link to each tool's own help page when a setting matters.
